The best-kept secret in clean renewable energy: community solar!

Jul 10, 2024

Subscribe to a solar farm, get renewable energy and a discount on your electric bill!

The Oregon Community Solar Program allows thousands of Oregonians to power their homes with solar energy by subscribing to large off-site solar projects built here in Oregon. It’s easy to enroll, there are no up-front cost, and you can save 5% (or up to 15%! See below) on your electric bill once the solar farm is completed. Renters, home owners, businesses, HOAs, and nonprofits with electric bills can all sign up. All you need is a recent electric bill or your account number.

With the Oregon Community Solar Program you:

  • Don’t need to own your home. In fact you can live in an apartment, mobile home—any kind of home as long as you have a utility bill.
  • Don’t need a sunny roof suitable for solar
  • Can take your subscription with you to a new home within your utility’s service area
  • Aren’t responsible for repairs and maintenance of the solar array
  • Must be a customer of PGE, Pacific Power or Idaho Power

Benefits of community solar:

  • Get solar credits on your bill, offsetting your electricity use. Most customers see savings on their bills.
  • Help the planet—reduce your carbon footprint by offsetting your energy use with clean renewable energy.
  • Support local solar development and local clean energy jobs.
  • Households that meet low-income guidelines are eligible for discounted subscription rates and other benefits.

How it works:

  • Sign up as a subscriber to a local solar project. In some cases, you may have to wait for the solar project to be built and come online, which could take 6 months or more.
  • The solar project generates clean, renewable energy for the utility grid.
  • Receive a credit on your monthly electric bill for your portion of the solar energy generated and pay a subscription fee. The credit more than covers the subscription fee, giving you a small net discount on your bill.
