Make a plan
Home electrification is a process, not a single project. You may take months, or even years, to fully transition your home. The process will look a little different for everyone, but there is one first step that applies to every home: Conduct a home inventory and take stock of where you are today. Then find a few things you can swap out right away!
Once you’ve enrolled, check out Rewiring America’s free Personal Electrification Planner tool. It provides detailed recommendations about potential upgrades and the incentives you qualify for. Download our Get Started Guide for a printable inventory to help you start your journey.

Here are some helpful tips for getting started on your electrification journey:
- Don’t wait for your appliances to break before replacing. If you want to upgrade to a heat pump, for example, start the switch before your current heating system fails. In an emergency, you’re more likely to replace like for like.
- Start with your priorities. Want improved air quality? Replace your gas range with an induction range. Want to greatly reduce your carbon footprint? Replace your water heater, car and furnace for the biggest impact. Want improved home comfort? Get a heat pump.
- Get a home energy audit. This is a great way to get a holistic picture of your home’s energy use, along with recommendations for improvements that will have the biggest impact.
- Plan for replacements over time. You don’t have to do everything at once. Plan to replace old appliances as they start to age out, or think about making one big electrification upgrade annually.
- Need some information to get started? Check out Electrify Now’s helpful collection of resources about energy efficient electrification upgrades, from heat pumps to community solar to EVs.
